Project Pagoda

Prayou Vong pagoda was built before Pol Pot regime. It is a very old pagoda with few monks. After a Paris peace agreement in 1993 there were lots of people migrated from various provinces around the country came to seek for job opportunity. However they just could find their accommodation in the pagoda to stay in their own cottage around the pagoda. in 1995 the people was threatened to evict by the monk. USG (urban sector group) a local NGO has organized the people there as a community to advocate with the government for their housing right. Because this community looks not a lucrative area, the government then allowed the people kept living without any disturbance until nowadays. Children at project Pagoda

There are about 200 families are living in the community. Because of their parents are too poor to send them to English class and support their daily living, some children have forced themselves to go on street to do some business by their own, such as: shoes polish, selling books with carrying a small basket, beggar and etc. Cooperated with USG, and a part of community development, Khmer Volunteer has set up an English class in the pagoda to provide lessons to the children who are not affordable to the private school in the community so that the children can be happy to join the class.

However, it is not enough to help! If their daily food is not enough, every children has to go on street to earn more moeny to survive themselves and this situation force them drop the class or come to the class not regularly. The best way to help them is to provide them some parts of help such 50 kilograms of rice (costs 20USD) and 22USD for their food per month. We can help every children for three years period and hope within this three-years opportunity they will be able to speak English and can earn money easily than they were young. Also, we could help to ease their families burden as well.

Project Dumpsite

Work at dumpsiteSince the last ten years, rapid growth has taken place in and around Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia and the center of its nascent but rapidly expanding economy. This city suffered neglect during the two decades of civil war and continues to grapple with a large number of urban problems such as vercrowding, poor infrastructure, and weak institutions. In the last two decades, Phnom Penh has seen unprecedented in-migration of the poor with no means of livelihood in the rural areas. The number of squatters is estimated to be nearly 20 per cent of the city’s population of 1.1 million. The urban poor are a growing underclass composed of cyclo-drivers, garbage pickers, street children, and sex workers.

It is even worse than last few years ago due to the gasoline price in local market has been boomed up which caused everything else has also increased its price. With 1.50USD to 3USD earning per day, children have forced themselves to help their parents in order to get some more extra income.

Kimlay's visit at dumpsite family and childrenTo improve their quality of life and provide opportunity to the urban poor families at dumpsite, Khmer Volunteer has initiated its own ideas to mobilize the people both inside and outside the country to raise fund for helps. So far we have 23 children get our sponsorship in term of daily schooling fee and 50 kilograms of rice per month. With this amount of helps, we do hope the children will make their lifes change for the brilliant future and will not be the same to their parents' living condition. With this money they have been sent to public school as other children in the country.

We select and help children by going to visit their family eight times per month, also check everything related to their study and family if there were any problem happened to them such as domestic violence, absence from school, study record from their teacher.

How we know this child would like to go to study and really poor? It is not easy to do. We have to go and a look for investigating several time and ask for many information from their neighnors and local authority, number of member in the family and as well check everything in household and their income per day.

Project Orphanage

OrphanageNot only the project Pagoda and Dumpsite children that Khmer Volunteer Program involves with, but there are at least three other orphanages get our monthly support from the program thought volunteering work. Project Urban Poor Community Development

Meeting on disaster management committeeThe population of Phnom Penh is expanding with an annual growth of 8%, caused by migration and natural growth, 30% of them are living in the urban poor community due to this growth and the development of the city. The growing is underclass and composed of cyclo-drivers, garbage pickers, street children, and sex workers. In recent years several urban poor communities have faced human made disaster which was called forced eviction. The insufficient livelihood they are living in causes a lot of diseases and negative effects on the lives of the urban poor.

The Municipality of Phnom Penh recognizes this problem and has initiated some community based pilot projects to provide services, shelter, and employment opportunities for the squatters. In July 2001, the Phnom Penh Governor announced a scheme to relocate 80 percent of the total squatters to sites outside the city. Some services are being provided on these sites under the UNDP/UN-HABITAT Phnom Penh Urban Poverty Reduction Project funded by DFID/UK but these are far from sufficient to address the needs of these communities or squatters at large in Phnom Penh. While these initiatives are commendable, there is an urgent need for building capacity to strengthen local governments in the Phnom Penh area to deal with human security concerns while planning for urban development. Inadequate capacity and governance have been indicated as constraints in implementing programs in the city.

In Phnom Penh, due to the use of packing materials and the high density, low education and untidiness in urban poor communities, the garbage is throwing everywhere in the communities and along the public streets. It is look like a culture that come from one generation to next generation just follow each other while the other see that some just throwing the garbage away in front of their house without any packing for the garbage truck which causes somekind of diseases.

The diseases are not only allow them lose money but also harm to their future health while they are living with lack of nutrition with a very stink and dirty environment. Small children with careless from their parents always play around on the ground near the garbage pile around the area due to the other part of the community is full with water of channel and rice fields. This kind of situation bring them with illness and always very harmful to their growth in term of body and brain.

They are living on water channel and the water produced a lot mostiquo due to the people always throw garbage onto the water. There is no buplic clean water and electricity connection in the community. People need to buy private clean water and the electricity. Some of them use candle to light their house during the night time. Moreover the people in this community is have no land to live. The nowadays land is owned by Phnom Penh municipality.
